The Nova GP format: Grand Prix, prize money, one evening

The Nova GP is not an Open. Instead, the federation invites a selection of competitors, then splits them into single-elimination Grand Prix. Each match lasts 7 minutes. In 2026, three eight-man brackets (heavyweight, lightweight, women) gathered 24 fighters. Furthermore, the whole card was settled in one evening. In other words, it is the easiest event to follow on the French circuit: you arrive, you watch three full tournaments, you leave with three champions.

The 2026 prize money, the benchmark

Prize money completes the package. First, €1,000 for each Grand Prix winner and €500 for each finalist. Then €1,000 for the fastest submission and €1,000 for the best fighter of the night. Finally, €500 each for the two fighters of the fight of the night. In total, the CFJJB paid out €7,500 last year. For now, we do not know whether the federation keeps this scale or the number of brackets in 2027. However, the success of the first edition argues for at least an equivalent line-up.

What sets it apart from an Open

  • Selection: no registration, the federation picks the athletes.
  • Format: eight-man brackets, single elimination, 7-minute matches.
  • One evening: three full tournaments in a few hours.
  • Prize money: €7,500 paid out in 2026.
  • Audience: one mat, a real show, a proper broadcast.

Looking back at 2026: three Grand Prix, three champions

The first edition took place on Thursday 5 February 2026 at Stade Charléty and delivered three winners. First, Henrique Soares took the heavyweight Grand Prix by referee decision over Freddy Lele Talla, the future IBJJF European purple belt champion. Then Bilel Bensaid dominated the lightweight Grand Prix against Youness Bennouali; the crowd also saw him named best fighter of the night. Finally, Anna Wodicka won the women’s bracket against Noémie Gluck.

In addition, Florian Chapelain pocketed the fastest-submission bonus with an armbar, while Clara Galludec and Noémie Gluck shared the fight-of-the-night bonus. You will find the match-by-match detail in our Nova GP 2026 preview. In short, the federation won its bet: a short, dense and spectacular event that gives the best French athletes a showcase outside the classic championships.

What is still to be announced for 2027

As of 12 October 2026, the CFJJB has confirmed the date and the city, nothing else. So we are waiting for the venue, Charléty or another Paris arena. We are also waiting for the list of selected athletes and divisions, the prize money, the broadcast and the ticketing. Most likely, selections will rely on the autumn results: regional Opens from October to December and the Paris Fall Open IBJJF at the end of November. In practice, competitors who stack podiums before Christmas put themselves at the top of the list.

Why this evening matters for the season

The Nova GP opens the national block of the season. After it come the National Masters Championship at the end of February, the French Cup in March, then the French Open in early April and the National GI Championship in June. Consequently, a good Nova GP launches a bid for the French national team. Conversely, missing the selection closes no door: the National GI Championship remains the basis for selection. For every date of the season, Opens included, see our calendar of BJJ competitions in France.

How to follow the Nova GP 2027

Two channels are enough. On one hand, the CFJJB calendar, which publishes the official page and the ticketing. On the other hand, this page and our Nova GP section, where we publish the card as soon as it is announced, then a full report the day after the event. If you want to brush up on the rules before watching, our point scoring guide and its quiz take ten minutes.
