Mikey Musumeci: profile of the American BJJ prodigy

A 64-kilo kid who eats pizza, quotes Star Wars and bends legs. Four IBJJF world titles, a ONE belt defended three times, a UFC BJJ belt defended three times, and a submission that carries his name. The profile of Mikey Musumeci, the first American to string together black belt world titles. At 30, he is now preparing a move to MMA.

Las Vegas, 25 June 2025. Inside the Meta Apex, the UFC launches its grappling league. The first belt is contested between Mikey Musumeci and Brazil’s Rerisson Gabriel. At 1:12 of the third round, Musumeci locks in a heel hook and Gabriel taps. He is the first bantamweight champion in UFC BJJ history. To the MMA audience discovering him, he is a smiling little guy with an unlikely nickname, “Darth Rigatoni”. To the jiu-jitsu world, however, it is the logical next step of a path that started at four years old in New Jersey. That path then ran through the IBJJF Worlds, San Jose and Singapore.

This Mikey Musumeci profile covers everything. First the childhood on the mats and the black belt at 18. Then the four world titles under Caio Terra and the “Mikey lock”. Next the ONE Championship years, the UFC BJJ belt and its three defences through May 2026. Finally, the no-leg-locks match against Bryce Mitchell in September 2026, which said everything about what he is aiming for next.

Who is Mikey Musumeci and how did he start?

Mikey Musumeci is an American grappler born on 7 July 1996 in Marlboro, New Jersey. He is a four-time IBJJF black belt world champion and a former ONE submission grappling champion. Since June 2025 he has also been UFC BJJ bantamweight champion. He started jiu-jitsu at four with Fernando “Cabeça” at Fatijo’s Martial Arts Academy and never stopped. His older sister Tammi followed the same path: the Musumecis are a mat family.

From New Jersey to Florida, a childhood between academies

When Mikey was ten, the family moved to Florida. He spent a short time with Marcelo Ribeiro, then joined Emyr “Shark” Bussade at American Top Team. That is where he received his green and blue belts. His purple then came from Javill Byron in Miami. In between, he piled up juvenile titles: IBJJF juvenile world champion in 2012 and 2013, juvenile no-gi world champion as early as 2011. The Mendes brothers, met at seminars, then took him under their wing. As a result, Guilherme Mendes awarded him the brown belt at Art of Jiu-Jitsu.

What followed was a clean sweep: world champion at purple in 2014, then at brown in 2015. He was 18 and had won the Worlds at every coloured belt. In 2016, Jonatas Gurgel and Gilbert Burns jointly awarded him the black belt. Burns, a future UFC welterweight title challenger, trained with him at the Jaco Training Center. For context, see our guide to the meaning of each belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Why was Caio Terra decisive for Mikey Musumeci?

An almost perfect first year at black belt

From 2016, at black belt, Musumeci won the Pans, the American Nationals and the No-Gi Worlds. Yet the gi world title, the one that counts, escaped him that year. So in late 2016 he left Art of Jiu-Jitsu with his sister Tammi to join the Caio Terra Association in San Jose. In their words, it was the team closest to their values. The choice was no accident. Caio Terra weighs 57 kilos, holds twelve world titles and lives by the motto “technique conquers all”. For a 64-kilo athlete who had always won through technique, he was the ideal coach.

The result was immediate. In 2017 he won the IBJJF Worlds at featherweight. Then he did it again in 2018 and became the first American to win back-to-back black belt world titles. He then added 2019, and 2021 after the 2020 cancellation.

Four gi world titles, an American record. Under Caio, it was above all his guard retention that changed dimension. The rule has two steps: never get passed, then take the back. We told that story in our Caio Terra profile.

The absolute gamble, in his coach’s footsteps

At the 2020 European Open, Musumeci entered the absolute on top of his division. Caio Terra and Royler Gracie had done it before him. For a featherweight it is a statement: technique has to hold against opponents 30 kilos heavier. There he faced, among others, France’s Seif-Eddine Houmine, more than 30 kilos above him. He did not win a title there. However, that habit of testing himself against bigger men explains the rest of his career. It runs from the ONE openweight match against Shinya Aoki to the bout against an MMA bantamweight in 2026.

What is Mikey Musumeci’s record?

Mikey Musumeci holds four IBJJF black belt world titles (2017, 2018, 2019, 2021) and one no-gi world title (2016). Add a Pan title (2016), two European Opens (2017, 2020) and an Abu Dhabi World Pro (2017). He was then ONE flyweight submission grappling champion from 2022 to 2024, with three defences. Finally, he has been UFC BJJ bantamweight champion since 25 June 2025, also with three defences. Black belt record according to BJJ Heroes: 70 wins, 5 losses.

What is Mikey Musumeci’s style, and what is the Mikey lock?

Mikey Musumeci’s style is a complete guard game. First, near-impassable guard retention. Then the berimbolo, his favourite route to the back. Finally, in no-gi, a leg attack system built around the K guard. The Mikey lock is his signature submission. It is a heel hook variation where the opponent’s leg is controlled so as to block the rotation of the knee. The finish is therefore faster and harder to defend. BJJ Heroes credits him with eleven wins by Mikey lock.

In the gi: never get passed, take the back

His four world titles rest on a simple idea inherited from San Jose: the opponent does not pass. Musumeci’s hips reset before the passer can settle. His legs rebuild the distance. From there, any over-committed pressure becomes a berimbolo entry or a back take. Fourteen of his black belt submissions are thus chokes from the back. It is not a spectacular game for an MMA crowd. Yet it is the hardest to beat on points, and the Worlds are won on points.

In no-gi: the legs, and the Mikey lock

The move to no-gi transformed his arsenal, from 2021 and his arrival at Pedigo Submission Fighting. Indeed, gi guards do not hold without grips. So he built a leg attack system from K guard and from the knees. Then he invented his own finish. Twenty-two of his submissions are straight ankle locks, eleven are Mikey locks. His dominance at ONE and then UFC BJJ was built on that: Gabriel, Carrasco, Montague and Dantzler all gave up a leg.

Pizza, pasta and Star Wars: the character

The nickname “Darth Rigatoni” came from a fan and sums up the character. Mikey is a Star Wars fan who proudly claims a pizza-and-pasta diet. He has even turned it into a brand. Behind the joke, however, is an athlete who has always weighed around 64 kilos, without brutal weight cuts. His easy-going interviews also contrast with the precision of what he does on the mat. For those wondering what champions really eat, our article on nutrition in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gives a less whimsical answer.

Mikey Musumeci at ONE Championship: a champion in Singapore

On 1 October 2022, Mikey Musumeci beat Cleber Sousa by unanimous decision. He thus became the first ONE flyweight submission grappling champion. He then defended the title three times. First Gantumur Bayanduuren in January 2023. Then Osamah Almarwai by rear naked choke in May 2023. Finally Jarred Brooks by armbar in August 2023. Along the way he moved to Singapore to train at Evolve MMA. The organisation then made him one of its showcases.

Aoki, Gabriel Sousa, and the exit

In October 2023 he accepted an openweight match against Shinya Aoki, a Japanese MMA legend and inventor of the Aoki lock. He submitted him with his own technique, an Aoki lock. We recount that nod in our Shinya Aoki profile. In June 2024, at ONE 167, he then submitted Gabriel Sousa with a calf slicer. A lightweight title fight against Kade Ruotolo was announced for September 2024. But Ruotolo was injured, and ONE stripped Musumeci of his flyweight belt on 5 September 2024. On 2 November 2024 he therefore announced he was leaving the organisation.

Mikey Musumeci at UFC BJJ: first champion, three defences

After leaving ONE, Musumeci joined Cobrinha BJJ under Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles in February 2024, then signed with the UFC. He debuted at Fight Pass Invitational 9 in December 2024. On 25 June 2025 he then became the first UFC BJJ bantamweight champion by heel-hooking Rerisson Gabriel. Finally, he defended the belt three times. Keven Carrasco by Mikey lock on 2 October 2025. Shay Montague by foot lock on 12 February 2026. Kevin Dantzler by leg attack on 21 May 2026.

The three defences, as covered on BJJ-Rules

We followed each of those nights. First the birth of the league and the first title in UFC BJJ 1. Then the defence against Montague in our UFC BJJ 5 recap. Next the one against Dantzler in our UFC BJJ 8 recap. The thread is always the same. An opponent tries to stay on his feet or to pass, and a leg eventually goes. The rules of this league are neither IBJJF nor ADCC. To understand them, see our analysis of UFC BJJ.

24 September 2026: Bryce Mitchell, no leg locks

On 24 September 2026, at UFC BJJ 11, Musumeci faced Bryce Mitchell, a UFC MMA bantamweight. The match was non-title and fought under an unusual rule: no leg locks. Deprived of his main weapon, he still dominated fifteen minutes from the guard. He thus won by unanimous decision. In the third round, Mitchell lifted and slammed him, earning a warning from referee Vitor Ribeiro. Mitchell later admitted he would have needed punches to get out of most of those positions.

The most interesting part is what Musumeci said afterwards: “It was fun. I’m training MMA now so I like that.” He is indeed training full time at Syndicate MMA in Las Vegas. His first MMA date has not been set yet. For a 64-kilo athlete who has never taken a punch in competition, it is the riskiest bet of his career. It is also the one the whole grappling world will be watching.

Why does Mikey Musumeci matter so much to American jiu-jitsu?

Mikey Musumeci is the first American to have won more than two IBJJF black belt world titles. That is notable in a sport dominated by Brazilians since its creation. He then carried professional grappling across two continents, ONE in Asia and then the UFC in the United States. He also remains one of the rare small athletes to headline main cards. His trajectory, from the gi Worlds to no-gi belts, has therefore become the model for young American competitors.

He also embodies a lineage. He is Caio Terra’s student who extended “technique conquers all” into modern grappling, with the legs added. On a circuit where heavyweights draw the attention, from Buchecha to Gordon Ryan, he proved a featherweight could be a headliner. Finally, like the greats before him, he gave his name to a submission.

FAQ: Mikey Musumeci

How many world titles has Mikey Musumeci won?

Four IBJJF black belt world titles at featherweight, in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021, plus a no-gi world title in 2016. He also won the Worlds at every coloured belt. He is thus the first American to have won more than two black belt world titles.

How old is Mikey Musumeci?

Mikey Musumeci was born on 7 July 1996 in Marlboro, New Jersey. He is therefore 30 in 2026. He received his black belt in 2016, at 18, from Jonatas Gurgel and Gilbert Burns.

What is the Mikey lock?

The Mikey lock is a heel hook variation invented by Mikey Musumeci. The opponent’s leg is controlled so as to block the rotation of the knee, which speeds up the finish. It notably won his first UFC BJJ title defence against Keven Carrasco in October 2025. BJJ Heroes credits him with eleven wins by that submission.

Is Mikey Musumeci still UFC BJJ champion?

Yes. He won the bantamweight belt on 25 June 2025 against Rerisson Gabriel. He then defended it three times, against Keven Carrasco, Shay Montague and Kevin Dantzler, through May 2026. His 24 September 2026 match against Bryce Mitchell, however, was a non-title bout.

Who is Mikey Musumeci’s coach?

Is Mikey Musumeci going to fight MMA?

He said so himself after his match against Bryce Mitchell on 24 September 2026: he is training MMA full time at Syndicate MMA. However, no date for a first fight had been set as of October 2026.

Conclusion: the featherweight who won everything, and starts over

At 30, Mikey Musumeci has already done what few grapplers do in a career. The Worlds at every belt, four titles at black, a belt in Asia, a belt in the UFC. He could have settled into the role of the likeable pizza-eating champion. Instead, he is choosing to start from zero in a sport where you get hit.

What will not change is the core. A guard-and-legs jiu-jitsu designed as a system, inherited from Caio Terra and pushed further. For more champions who marked the sport through method, browse our BJJ Legends section.
